Food security is a major challenge in Mathare. Traditional farming is rarely possible due to limited space and soil pollution.
SlumRise is introducing vertical farming systems that allow fresh vegetables to be grown in small areas. These gardens provide nutritious food for children at the Why Not Academy, while also teaching practical skills and promoting healthier diets.
SlumRise’s most important project is the Why Not Academy in Mathare—a safe space where children can learn, grow, and play.
The academy also provides a vital daily meal, offering stability and support to families facing food insecurity.
